RED LIGHT, EXPLAINED

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy, sometimes called photobiomodulation, uses visible red and near-infrared wavelengths rather than ultraviolet light. These wavelengths are absorbed by light-sensitive parts of cells and may influence mitochondrial activity—the process involved in producing cellular energy, known as ATP.

Put simply: red light is used closer to the skin’s surface, while infrared light reaches more deeply and creates gentle warmth. Researchers continue to study the most effective wavelengths, doses and treatment schedules, so benefits should be described as supportive rather than guaranteed.

WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE LIGHTCARE

Four reasons to make red light part of your routine

Your reason can be cosmetic, physical or simply personal. Choose the programme around how you want to feel.

01

Skin appearance

For a complexion that looks fresher, smoother and more radiant.

02

Movement + recovery

For active bodies, tired muscles and everyday physical tension.

03

Relaxation + wellbeing

For a quiet pause that feels warm, restorative and unhurried.

04

Light without tanning

For clients who want a dedicated light-based wellbeing session.

WHO IS IT FOR?

LightCare may suit you if…

01

Skin-first

You are focused on radiance, smoother-looking texture, tone or the appearance of fine lines.

02

Active

You train, play sport, stand all day or want gentle warmth for tired, tense-feeling muscles.

03

Reset

You want a calm, non-invasive ritual that creates space to pause and relax.

04

UV-free

You want the light experience without a tan or you are taking a break from UV sessions.

Looking for help with a diagnosed condition?

Red light is being studied in many areas, but a salon service is not a substitute for clinical diagnosis or treatment. If your goal relates to acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, pain, inflammation, joint problems or sleep, speak to your GP, dermatologist or treating clinician before booking.

THE WIDER RED-LIGHT CONVERSATION

Other reasons people explore red light

Red and near-infrared light are being researched across a wide range of cosmetic, physical and wellbeing goals. Evidence is not equally strong for every use, and results from one device or protocol cannot automatically be applied to another.

SKIN + APPEARANCE

Beyond everyday radiance

Research and consumer guidance often discuss fine lines, texture, redness, blemishes, scars, stretch marks and the appearance of cellulite.

PHYSICAL RECOVERY

Beyond tired muscles

Red light is also studied in relation to exercise recovery, muscle soreness and fatigue, joint comfort, circulation and inflammatory symptoms.

REST + WELLBEING

Beyond the session itself

People may explore light-based routines for relaxation, sleep-wake habits, mood and a general sense of energy or vitality.

What this means at TAN

LightCare can be part of a cosmetic or wellbeing routine, but TAN does not promise treatment of scars, wounds, pain, inflammation, sleep problems, mental health concerns or diagnosed skin and joint conditions. Those goals need advice from an appropriately qualified clinician.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

LightCare FAQs

Is LightCare the same as a tanning session?

No. Beauty Light and Energizing Light are dedicated UV-free programmes on the K11 Air Select. They do not create a tan. The machine also offers separate UV tanning programmes, so always ask the TAN team to confirm the correct mode.

Beauty Light is the skin-focused red-light option. Energizing Light combines red and infrared light for a warmer experience designed around relaxation, vitality and recovery-focused wellbeing.

Expect bright red light, full-body coverage and gentle warmth. Many people find the experience calm and relaxing. Tell the team immediately if you feel pain, burning, dizziness or unusual discomfort.

Warmth and relaxation may be noticeable during or shortly after a session. Changes in skin appearance are usually gradual. Response varies with the individual, the goal and consistency, so no result can be guaranteed.

There is no single schedule that suits everyone. The TAN team will explain the available programme and manufacturer guidance. If your goal relates to a diagnosed condition, ask your clinician for advice before starting.

Light only reaches exposed skin, so dress to expose the areas you want illuminated while keeping yourself comfortable. Arrive with clean, dry skin and follow the team’s guidance on cosmetics, skincare and eyewear.

Some medicines and skincare can increase sensitivity to light. Check the information supplied with your medicine and ask a pharmacist, GP or treating clinician if you are unsure. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

LightCare at TAN is offered as a cosmetic and wellbeing service, not a medical treatment. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. Speak to a qualified clinician about pain, inflammation, sleep problems or diagnosed skin conditions.
